TRUMP SAYS CHINA’S XI IS A GREAT LEADER AS HE ARRIVES IN WASHINGTON
A 100-foot long red carpet was unfurled at the bottom of the staircase placed at the door of Xi's plane as Trump welcomed him with a planeside ceremony and extension of the trade truce. The ceremony also included a flyover by two B-1 bombers, platoons from each military service, and a presentation of the flags and anthems of both countries. Some Republicans have questioned the optics of the visit, with Sen. Roger Wicker criticizing the "lavish welcome" and Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying the U.S. and China must interact at the highest levels. China had hoped for a longer extension of the trade truce, but the U.S. agreed to extend it until January. The visit is expected to be a mix of pomp and substance, with the two leaders set to talk about issues of substance more on Thursday. The tight timeframe gives the U.S. a chance to test whether China will deliver on unmet promises to buy U.S. farm goods. Trump has lavished praise on Xi as a "great leader" and described a warm relationship with the man he has called a friend. The U.S. and China are the two largest economies in the world, and their relationship is crucial to the global economy. As the world's two most powerful militaries, they must interact at the highest levels. The visit is a significant moment in the complex and often contentious relationship between the two countries.
